NEWS

At our March 2024 meeting Bill Lindsay will bring some copies of his recently published book on William Schaw Lindsay for sale at reduced price of £20.

Our February meeting coincides with Ash Wednesday when there will be  a service in the church, so we will meet in the side room we have used in the past.

Looking forward to an interesting talk next Wednesday 13th December at 7pm  by Ray Lonsdale, creator of over 30 statues including Tommy, Fiddlers Green and lately the Herring Girl.

All welcome £5 entry (cash) to non-members off History Society.

Although we were concerned some members might not be happy to attend the last meeting of the season on the 13th April about William Linskill held in the smaller hall and some were indeed missing, we still had an excellent attendance of 38 including 11 new visitors who were most welcome and we hope to see again for the next series of talks. A list of these talks can be seen on the "Events" page.

We were notified after the last meeting in March that when our next meeting on 13th April is due there is a Holy Week service in the church where we normally meet. This means for this meeting only we will go back to the adjacent hall where we used to meet. This of course is less spacious but we hope will be acceptable to our members.

Another well attended meeting on 12th January 2022 when we were entertained to a fascinating talk about Press Gangs with musical accompaniment of Northumbrian Pipes, Guitar and Whistle. Thanks to Pete Cryer, Alan and Pauline Giles.

We are pleased to advise that after a year of cancelled meeting due to Covid we will resume on 13th October 2021.

For those who have not been been before, we have our meetings in the main church building which benefits from a large screen to aid presentations. There is therefore plenty of space for socially distanced seating in a well aired space.

Very sad to report on Saturday 24th October 2020 our dear President Birket Foster died. A great to loss to family, friends and our Society.

His funeral is on Wednesday 4th November 10.30 at Preston Crematorium. Numbers are restricted but the family would be pleased to see his friends and associates gathered outside.

Lionel Black a stalwart long time supporter of the Society and committee member sadly died suddenly at home on the 20th August 2020. He will be greatly missed.

After many years meeting in the Kings Priory School, from October 2018 we moved to Holy Saviours Parish Centre on The Broadway.

At Decembers meeting after a fascinating talk by Richard Stevenson about the 1854 Great Fire of Gateshead and Newcastle, Birket Foster was presented with a framed picture by Susanne Wooley and Margaret Sturmey in recognition of over 50 years of his service to the Society as Vice President, Honorary Secretary and President.
